Passive Tense Exercises

: practice asking and answering questions using the passive tense with the verb 'call'. The activities use nature vocabulary and the questions, 'What's this called in English?' and 'Is this called ...?' For more passive tense practice, see the passive tense games on this site.

This game focuses on use of the passive tense to ask and answer about the English word for certain objects. There is a nature vocabulary practice section and spelling exercises for the vocabulary. Then, there are conversation practice exercises, asking what things are called. The vocabulary for these exercises match the ESL Curriculum - Unit 6.

The questions and answers for the grammar exercises are:

A: What's that called?

B: It's called dirt.

A: Is that called a forest?

B: Yes, it is./No, it's not.

A: What's this called in English?

B: It's called a waterfall.

A: Is this called a pond?

B: No. It's not called a pond.

Other notes:

The spelling game will accept the vocabulary word as is, "pond", or with an article "a pond".  Uncountable (noncount) items will take "some" - "mud" or "some mud".

Listening question and answer exercises: The main grammar for these activities is the passive tense, using 'This is called ... in English.' However, the listening exercises should not require grammar explanation.

In the grammar section there is emphasis on being able to make questions, negative statements and affirmative statements in the passive tense. The activities only use one verb form 'to be called'. This should work as good form practice, but if you'd like more passive tense practice, try the passive tense exercises.
